The Capsule Wardrobe Checklist (Every Season, Every Body)

Most "capsule wardrobe checklists" online are someone's personal wardrobe dressed up as a universal rule. This isn't that. Below is a framework (the categories, ratios, and swaps that make a capsule actually work), followed by a concrete starter list you can adapt to your climate, body, and life.

What a capsule wardrobe really is

A capsule is a small, intentionally-chosen set of clothes where every piece works with most others. The goal isn't austerity; it's removing the daily decision of "what do I wear?" by guaranteeing that whatever you grab, it works.

The magic number isn't 33 items, or 30, or any specific count. It's: how many outfits can I make? A good capsule produces 3–5x more outfits than items.

    The 5-3-2 ratio

Across years of styling, one ratio holds up surprisingly well:

    • 5 tops for every 3 bottoms for every 2 layering pieces

So a tight 20-piece capsule looks like:

    • 10 tops (tees, blouses, knits)
    • 6 bottoms (trousers, jeans, skirts)
    • 4 layers (jackets, cardigans, blazers)

Add: 1–2 dresses or jumpsuits, 2–3 shoes, plus seasonal extras. That's it.

The colour rule that does the heavy lifting

A capsule fails when pieces don't combine. The fix is a 3-colour palette:

    1. A neutral base: black, navy, charcoal, or camel
    2. A second neutral: white, cream, grey, or tan
    3. One accent: your favourite colour, used in 2–3 pieces

Every item in the capsule must work with at least two pieces in another colour. If it doesn't, it stays out.

    Capsule wardrobe checklist (year-round core)

This is the universal core. Adapt fabric weight to your climate.

    Tops (10)

    • 3 plain t-shirts (white, black, accent)
    • 2 long-sleeve tees or fine knits
    • 2 button-down shirts (white + striped or chambray)
    • 2 nicer blouses or going-out tops
    • 1 sweatshirt or hoodie

    Bottoms (6)

    • 2 well-fitting jeans (one mid-wash, one dark or black)
    • 1 pair of tailored trousers
    • 1 pair of casual trousers (chinos, wide-leg, cargos)
    • 1 skirt OR shorts (climate-dependent)
    • 1 pair of leggings or joggers

    Layers (4)

    • 1 blazer
    • 1 cardigan or pullover
    • 1 light jacket (denim, leather, or utility)
    • 1 winter coat or trench (season-dependent)

    Dresses / one-pieces (1–2)

    • 1 day dress that works dressed up or down
    • Optional: 1 jumpsuit or formal dress

    Shoes (3)

    • 1 white or neutral trainer
    • 1 pair of boots (Chelsea, ankle, or chunky)
    • 1 dressier pair (loafers, heels, or smart sandals)

    Accessories

    • 1 belt that matches your dressier shoes
    • 1 cross-body or tote bag
    • A scarf or two for season transitions

That's around 25 pieces excluding underwear, socks, and gym kit. Tighter capsules drop one piece per category; relaxed capsules add 5–10 items in your most-worn category.

    Seasonal swaps, not seasonal wardrobes

Don't rebuild your capsule four times a year. Keep the core, swap the edges:

    SeasonAddRemove
SpringLight blazer, light scarfHeavy coat, chunky knits
SummerLinen shirts, shorts, sandalsBoots, wool layers
AutumnKnits, ankle boots, mid-weight jacketLinen, sandals
WinterHeavy coat, thermal layers, glovesShorts, light tops

Stored items go in a labelled box, not the same closet; that's the cluttering trap.

How to build a capsule from clothes you already own

You almost certainly don't need to buy a capsule. Most people already own one; it's just buried in a wardrobe of duplicates and one-time-wear pieces.

    Step-by-step:

    1. Photograph everything you own. A digital closet (we made one, Closet DJ) lets you see your wardrobe at a glance instead of guessing.
    2. Identify your top 30 most-worn pieces. They're already a capsule in disguise.
    3. Map them onto the 5-3-2 ratio. Note the gaps. If you have 12 tops and 2 bottoms, your gap is bottoms, not "more clothes."
    4. Set a 30-day moratorium on new purchases. Wear only the 30. You'll discover what's actually missing vs what you just think is missing.
    5. Fill real gaps with intentional buys. No more, no less.

This approach beats the "buy a $2,000 capsule" advice every time, because the clothes are already proven to suit you.

    Common capsule mistakes

    • Going too neutral. A capsule of beige and grey is a uniform, not a wardrobe. Keep the accent colour.
    • Buying for the version of you that doesn't exist yet. Build for the life you actually have, not the life your Pinterest board suggests.
    • Forgetting the laundry maths. If you do laundry weekly, your capsule needs to cover 7 outfits per category. If you wash daily, fewer pieces work fine.
    • Ignoring your shoes. A great top with the wrong shoes ruins the outfit. Three well-chosen shoes outperform ten random pairs.

    Frequently asked questions

How many items should a capsule wardrobe have?

Anywhere from 25 to 50 pieces depending on your climate and how often you do laundry. The number matters less than the ratio (5-3-2) and the colour discipline.

Can a capsule wardrobe work for a professional / corporate job?

Yes, easier, in fact. Workwear is naturally more uniform. Lean heavier on tailored trousers, blazers, and button-downs; lighter on casual layers.

Do I have to throw out everything that doesn't fit the capsule?

No. Box up what you're unsure about for 90 days. Anything you didn't reach for in three months is a confident donate.

How do I plan outfits from a capsule wardrobe?

Once your wardrobe is digitised, an AI styling tool can generate every viable combination automatically. Closet DJ's outfit generator does exactly this: it builds outfits from your real closet so you can see what works without trying everything on.
